Assemble a commodity dossier that preserves the question and evidence

Connect source definitions, dated inputs, calculations and limitations into a reproducible research note.

A commodity dossier should let another reader reconstruct the question, the source vintage and the arithmetic. It should also show which physical, market or implementation questions remain unanswered.

Begin with a narrow commodity question

Define the commodity, geography, period and comparison before gathering numbers. How did a retained commercial-crude stock series change during 2020 is different from what caused oil prices to move. How did two USDA corn forecasts differ is different from whether the final crop met expectations.

A useful dossier names the question it can answer and avoids borrowing the authority of a broader topic. The publication’s crude, gas and corn studies are deliberately different: a historical stock path, a calendar-month seasonal comparison and a forecast-vintage balance comparison. Their methods should not be collapsed into one generic commodity score.

Create a compact source-to-result chain

For each input, record agency or exchange, dataset or report identifier, observation period, publication date where established, retrieval date, unit and rights basis. Retain the lawful source artifact and its digest. Then identify the extraction and transformation that produced the analysis table.

For the corn example, the chain points to WASDE 648 and 651, printed page twelve, the 2024/25 U.S. corn columns and the ending-stock and total-use rows. It then records division by total use and multiplication by one hundred. A reader can verify the approximately 14.197906 and 13.852322 percent ratios without guessing which edition was used.

Preserve the method’s defining choices

For an inventory comparison, record how weekly reference dates enter calendar months and how five annual month means receive equal weights. Keep the counts and any withheld comparisons. For the carry example, retain the sixty-day horizon, 365-day funding convention and separate storage and insurance units.

These details explain why two competent calculations can differ. An official daily-interpolated benchmark and the publication’s weekly-snapshot monthly mean are not the same statistic. A complete dossier identifies that distinction before presenting the numbers, reducing the temptation to describe every mismatch as a source error.

Separate observations from explanations and implementation

A measured stock build, an estimated balance residual and a hypothesis about demand are different statements. Label them accordingly. Add the evidence that would be needed to distinguish competing explanations, such as refinery activity, trade flows or reclassification notes, instead of presenting a plausible narrative as a demonstrated cause.

Implementation questions require another layer: exact contract identities, calendar rules, lawful price histories, exposure definitions and costs. The lab does not supply a trading system or empirical strategy validation. A two-price curve example can remain useful while clearly stopping short of an executable return study.

Make the dossier durable and reviewable

Package readable tables with machine-readable inputs and calculation definitions. Preserve the edition rather than silently replacing it when a source revises history. A later update should identify changed data or methods and explain whether earlier descriptive conclusions change. Do not turn a fresh retrieval timestamp into evidence of original release availability.

The result should end with specific limitations and next evidence needs, not an unsupported investment recommendation. Government statistics and official contract materials provide strong reference foundations within their scope. A well-built dossier makes that scope inspectable and keeps its conclusions proportional to the actual data, calculations and permissions retained.

Keep in the decision record

  • Anchor the dossier to one precisely stated commodity question.
  • Preserve source, vintage, units and transformation choices.
  • Keep descriptive evidence separate from causal and implementation claims.

Source dates and scope matter. Historical inventory observations are retained snapshots; forecasts and synthetic curve assumptions are labelled separately. No investment outcome or product coverage is implied.
